Netflix, Spotify and YouTube do not see anything in the Vision Pro (yet?)

As mentioned earlier, Netflix will not release an app for the Vision Pro. Even the iPad version of Netflix is not supported. Vision Pro users will just have to watch via Safari, the streaming service says. Update January 19, 2024: YouTube and Spotify will also not offer apps on the Vision Pro. In addition, they will not allow their iPad apps to be used on the headset. They recommend visiting the website in Safari. Both companies have confirmed their plans to Bloomberg. This means that the three largest streaming services in the world have dropped out. The apps may come at a later time. Google often needs a little more time to adjust apps, while Spotify has a hostile attitude towards Apple.

Update January 18, 2024: One of the spearheads of the Vision Pro is the new way of viewing entertainment. Apple's own films and series on Apple TV+ are of course available, but various other streaming services such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max have also created apps for the Vision Pro. Disney+ even offers 3D movies, so you can fully immerse yourself in the world of Disney. But Netflix sees no point in that, at least at the moment. Bloomberg reports that Netflix, the world's largest streaming service, does not have an app for the Vision Pro and that even the iPad version is not an option.

No Netflix on Vision Pro (except via web)

Netflix already indicated in July that there will be no separate Vision Pro app. However, Netflix did say that the iPad version is available to use on the Vision Pro. But it now appears that Netflix has also blocked that way of watching. Alternatively, Netflix refers to the web browser, “just like users can do on the Mac”, Netflix adds. It will therefore not be that easy to watch Netflix on the plane, because you cannot download films and series offline via the web.

Due to the lack of a Netflix app or the availability of the iPad app, you cannot watch Netflix with the special environments of the Vision Pro. It is not the first time that Netflix has not participated in new Apple developments. Netflix is also the biggest missing party in Apple's own TV app. While you can connect many other streaming services to the Apple TV app, this is not possible with Netflix. The app on the Apple TV is also often a bit behind compared to other Netflix TV apps.

These Vision Pro apps are coming

The first apps for Vision Pro have been announced. We show you what you can expect in terms of apps in the areas of entertainment, productivity, communication and games.

Below is our previous article from July 24, 2023

Mark Gurman writes in his Power On newsletter that Netflix will not make a Vision Pro app. The reporter was told by sources that Netflix has “no current plans to develop a native app for the Vision Pro”. Netflix already offers immersive content on other platforms. For example, you can watch series on the Meta Quest in a cozy living room, equipped with furniture and other homely items. The series is then played on a large, virtual television screen.

Developers who don't want to build a Vision Pro app from scratch have two options: allow users to run their iPad app as is on the headset, or make some adjustments for the Vision Pro. It may have to do with animosity between both companies. Netflix is one of the parties that rejects in-app purchases and the payment to Apple of 15% to 30%. The Netflix app also does not support AirPlay.

At the moment, there are only a few providers who have promised to fully focus on new apps for the Vision Pro. Zoom, Microsoft and Apple partner Disney are participating. But Apple will have to make a big effort to convince providers that work less closely with the company. There will be few users in the first year and the headset's $3,500 price will deter potential buyers. Meta also had difficulty convincing developers, even though those headsets only cost a few hundred euros.

And then there is also the price of the apps themselves: while people are used to iPhone apps To pay no more than $1, Gurman thinks the average Vision Pro apps will cost $20 and professional apps will cost between $50 and $250. Games can be expected to cost $40 to $60, something that wealthy early adopters may be willing to pay. But with such a limited audience, the question is whether developers want to invest heavily in it.

The fact that you can also immediately run iPad apps on the Vision Pro will in any case ensure that right from the start there is a huge choice of existing apps – but the experience will not always be optimal.
