European car market 2023, growth slows in September

After months of strong increases with very significant increases, the European car market closed the month of September 2023still positive but with faster growth limited. According to the latest data from ACEA, last month, registrations increased by 9.2% in the European Union, equal to 861,062 cars. Also including the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries, 1,166,728 registrations were recorded, equal to a growth of 11.1%.

Two of the EU's largest markets recorded major gains in September: Italy (+22.7%) and France (+10.7%). The German market, however, is remained relatively stable, with a slight decline of 0.1% compared to September 2022. Looking at the first 9 months of 2023, the European Union car market achieved growth of 16.9%, for a total of 7,940,749 cars registered.


Despite the positive result, the < strong>market remains 20% below the pre-pandemic levelwhen around 10 million units had been registered in 2019. With the exception of Hungary (-3.2%), all markets recorded progress during these nine months, including the four largest: Italy (+20.5%), Spain (+18.5%) , France (+15.9%) and Germany (+14.5%).

Also including the United Kingdom and EFTA countries, from January to September 2023, 9,684,894 cars were registered, equal to growth of 17%.

ELECTRIC CARS STILL OVERCOME DIESEL CARS

By entering more in detail, in the month of September, registrations of electric vehicles in the European Union rose by 14.3%, reaching 127,149 units. The market share reached 14.8%, far from the record share of 21% in August. The data for Germany should be highlighted. In this market, as we had recently seen, registrations of BEVs fell by 28.6% due to a remodulation of incentives (no more contributions for companies).

At the same time, however, registrations went well in the Netherlands (+70.8%), Sweden (+60.7%) and France (+34.2%). Despite the decline in Germany, overall, electric vehicles still did better than diesel models in September which closed the month of September 2023 with a share of 12.7% compared to 15.9% last year year.


We now come to hybrids whose registrations in the European Union have increased by 30.5% thanks to the good performance in Germany (+ 44.1%), Italy (+34.8%) and France (+30.2%). Market share of 27.3%. As regards, however, Plug-in hybrids, registrations in September were stable with +0.4%. The good results of markets such as France (+35.1%) and Belgium (+71.4%) helped offset the decline in Germany (-45.7%). The market share in September 2023 is was 8.2% against 8.9% in September 2022.

The petrol models did well, however, thanks to the results of the Italy (+32.2%), Germany (+9.1%), Spain (+3.2%) and France (+1.4%). Despite an increase in volumes of 5.5%, the market share, compared to last year, is fell to 34.1% from 35.3%.

Finally speaking of the Automotive Groups, again at the European Union level, the Volkswagen Group closed with growth of 9.6% (Volkswagen +6.1%; Skoda +3.3%; Audi +12.6%; Seat +46.7%; Cupra +20.1%; Porsche +3.7%). Followed by Stellantis with +11.3% (Peugeot +1.5%; Fiat +4.8%; Opel +17.8%; Citroen +10.7%; Jeep +124%; DS +1.9% ; Alfa Romeo +20.8%; Lancia/Chrysler +2.1%) and the Renault Group with an increase of 5.1% (Renault +5.2%; Dacia +4.9%; Alpine +22.3 %).
