Terna, electricity consumption slightly growing in September. Renewables at 38.4%

In the month of September 2023 there is There was a growth in electricity consumption of 0.5% compared to the same period in 2022. This is what emerges from a new photograph taken by Terna of Italy's monthly energy needs. Therefore, overall, in the month of September, the demand for electricity in Italy it is amounted to 26.2 billion kWh.

Looking at the period January-September 2023, the demand for electricity in Italy is down 4% compared to the same period in 2022. Also in September, the company which manages the national electricity transmission network has calculated the IMCEI index which examines the industrial consumption of approximately 1,000 “energy-intensive” companies. This index, in the month taken into consideration, shows a negative change of -0.9%. In the first 9 months of the year, the IMCEI index shows a decline of 4.8%.

In cyclical terms, the value of electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected by calendar and temperature effects, is slightly down by 0.5% compared to August 2023. However, the cyclical variation in the IMCEI index is growing (+3, 2%). Looking at the data at a territorial level, in September the trend change was positive everywhere, but differentiated: +0.1% in the North, +1.4% in the Center and +0.9% in the South and on the Islands.

HYDROELECTRIC PRODUCTION GOOD

By entering more in detail from Terna's report, in Italy, in the month of September, energy demand was 86% was satisfied with national production. The remaining 14%, however, is been satisfied by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. The net national production is amounted to 22.7 billion kWh, a value very similar to that of the previous year.

In September, renewables covered 38.4% of electricity demand

strong>(30.7% in September 2022), equal to 10.1 billion kWh. Production is so divided: 35.9% hydro, 29.8% photovoltaic, 16.4% wind, 13.5% biomass and 4.4% geothermal. Terna highlights a sharp decline in thermal production in Italy with -12.6% compared to the same month of 2022. Looking at the first 9 months of 2023 there is even a decline of 16.2% due to the combined effect of the contraction in demand , growth in renewable generation and imports. In particular, it is the decline in coal production was significant: -50.9% compared to September 2022, -29.8% from the beginning of 2023.

Overall, the company which manages the national electricity transmission network highlights that in the first 9 months of the year, the increase in capacity of renewables in Italy is was equal to 3,911 MW, a value approximately 1,900 MW higher (+95%) compared to the same period of 2022. Looking at the last 12 months (October 2022 – September 2023) the increase in capacity installed is amounted to 4,936 MW.

Finally, Terna highlights that the recovery of production from water sources continues (+74.7%) and the growth of photovoltaic (+24.7 %). Production from geothermal sources is also increasing (+1.1%). On the other hand, production from wind sources is decreasing (-4.4%).
