The Dakar is one of the most popular rally competitions tough on the motorsport scene. In addition to the drivers, the cars are also put to the test. Therefore, this race can be be an opportunity to also test new technologies and verify their functioning in particularly extreme conditions.
From Japan it is news has arrived that the HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology) association has decided to register the hydrogen-powered prototype, HySE-X1, at the Dakar 2024 which will be held in Saudi Arabia from 5 to 19 January 2024, in the Mission 1000 category, expressly created to give space to cars equipped with engines with low environmental impact.
We remind you that behind the HySE association we they are Toyota, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha who strongly believe in hydrogen technology.
THE PROTOTYPE
We still know few details about the HySE-X1 prototype. The car is created for rally competitions such as the Dakar and will have of a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine. Therefore, it is not a Fuel Cell solution but a 1 liter displacement engine of motorcycle origin which uses hydrogen as fuel instead of petrol. Unit which HySE is currently using for its activities of research. Refueling and maintenance will be performed by Overdrive Racing.
The Dakar 2024, therefore, will allow to the association to test the functioning of the hydrogen engine. All the data collected will allow us to further refine this technology. A few more details of this prototype could arrive in a few days given that it will be exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 which will open doors on October 26th. Kenji Komatsu, President of HySE and Executive Director of Yamaha's Technical Research and Development Center, commented:
We decided to participate in the Dakar Rally, which we know has a rich history and tradition. The main reason for our participation is give us the chance to communicate the results of our research in an easily understandable way. Furthermore, by participating in the event, we can identify potential problems and refine our technology to solve technical mobility issues. to hydrogen as soon as possible.
