The BMW Group has also decided to adopt Tesla's charging standard in North America. The brands of the German Group, namely BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce join the list of car manufacturers that have chosen to use the NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector.
More specifically, the BMW Group's electric models will adopt the charging standard of Elon Musk's car company, in the United States and Canada, starting from 2025. Also starting from this date, drivers of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce electric vehicles in the United States and Canada will have access to Tesla's Supercharger charging stations. Sebastian Mackensen, President. and CEO, BMW North America, commented:
With six all-electric BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models now available in the US market, and more on the way, our top priority is is ensuring our drivers have easy access to reliable and fast charging. This agreement with Tesla is Our latest effort to expand charging options for our customers as we continue on the road to electrification.
Compared to the announcements of other car manufacturers, nothing is has been said about future availability of adaptersto allow current electric cars equipped with the CCS connector to be able to recharge at stations with the NACS standard. Furthermore, there is no hint even about the possibility availability of adapters that will allow cars equipped with Tesla's charging standard to be able to supply energy at CCS charging stations.
In any case, the BMW Group highlights that it will continue to work, in parallel, on the project to create a widespread network of fast charging stations in the United States, through a joint venture with Hyundai, General Motors, Honda, Kia, Mercedes and Stellantis. The objective, as known, is that of creating a high-power network with at least 30 thousand charging points. The stations will be accessible to all and will have Combined Charging System (CCS) or North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors.
