Yesterday, Citroen debuted the new electric e-C3 offered at a starting price of less than 25 thousand euros. This car is based on the "Smart Car" platform by Stellantis, derived from PSA's CMP platform and specifically designed to allow the creation of electric models at affordable prices. The goal is that of being able to also face the growing offer of "small" battery-powered cars of Chinese brands (90% of the platform's suppliers are based in “low-cost” countries). The platform, however, also allows for the creation of endothermic vehicles.
Although, over time, all the brands of the automotive group will use the new STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms, the Smart Car platform, the result of the experience acquired in the development of cars for emerging markets, will cover an important role in the future.
Indeed, Renaud Tourte< /strong>, responsible for the Smart Car platform, said that, overall, around 7 models will be made on this platform. For example, next year will be the turn of the new C3 Aircross which, given the characteristics of the platform, will probably be offered in both endothermic and electric versions. Furthermore, new models will arrive for at least two brands, one of which will probably be Fiat.
The Smart Car platform will be the basis of the future Panda? At the time of the presentation of the Citroen e-C3, the feeling was that the future Fiat model would have a lot in common with the French one. Indeed, Renaud Tourte, when asked whether the new Fiat Panda, expected around halfway of 2024, will be one of the models based on the Smart Car platform, responded thus:
It's not It's completely silly to think so.
The platform is being industrialized in the Trnava plant in Slovakia but according to what Stellantis says, it could also arrive in other plants.
