Electric cars and safety, Mercedes shows its commitment

In a road safety test, Mercedes carried out the first public crash test involving two fully electric vehicles. This test, conducted at the Technology Center for Vehicle Safety in Sindelfingen (Germany), saw the collision between an EQA and an EQS SUV.

Unlike the requirements established by Euro NCAP, which provides for a frontal impact with a 1400 kg trolley, the Star of Stuttgart used two real cars weighing approximately 2.2 and 3 tonnes respectively . The speed of impact is was 56 km/h, higher than the required 50 km/h, exposing vehicles to collision energy significantly higher than the legal one.

Although the extensive deformation of the EVs after the collision may seem disturbing to a non-expert, the Three-Pointed Star engineers interpreted this as evidence of the vehicles' effectiveness in absorbing energy of the impact. In fact, the passenger safety cell in both models is remained intact while the doors remained functional.

Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer and Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes, said: “Safety is in Mercedes' DNA. This crash test demonstrates that all our vehicles, regardless of their propulsion technology, maintain a very high level of safety.”

TWO ADULT MANNEQUINS WERE USED FOR THE TESTS

In the test , the Mercedes EQA and the Mercedes EQS SUV were equipped with two adult dummies each. The analysis indicated a low risk of serious or fatal injury, demonstrating that shock absorption zones and advanced restraint systems offer considerable protection.

Paul Dick, Head of Vehicle Safety at Mercedes-Benz AG, underlined: “Our commitment to building the most safe in the world is evident from this crash test. Our expertise in electric vehicle safety is indisputable.”

Special attention is paid to was given to the dummies used. Hanna Paul, head of Mannequin Technology, said: “We have been using female mannequins for over 20 years, they are not just dolls, but accurate measuring instruments.”

Finally, Mercedes has developed a high-voltage safety concept for its electric vehicles. This system, which often exceeds legal requirements, has become proven effective during the latest crash test, automatically turning off the high voltage systems during the collision.
