Mazda is preparing to reveal big news on the occasion of the Japan Mobility Show 2023 (26 October – 5 November), and the new concept car based on Mazda MX-5 is undoubtedly the center of attention. Having said this, an important executive of the Japanese car manufacturer has revealed new details on the future of this iconic model.
According to what was stated by Kato Matsue – head of Mazda powertrain development – during an interview given to Top Gear, the MX-5 will soon be released electrified, but it will be necessary wait a little longer.
Matsue highlighted how the car is very popular in markets such as the United States, Europe and Japan. Although the latter is slightly late, market demand is changing in favor of electrification.
THE ELECTRIC MX-5 MUST WEIGH LITTLE
During the interview we also talked about the weight of electric vehicles, one of the main challenges that many manufacturers are facing. “We don't want the Mazda MX-5 to be too heavy. If it reached a weight of 1.5 tons, it would no longer be the MX-5 we know”, declared Matsue. This highlights the importance of lightness for the Japanese manufacturer, especially for a sports model like this.
Answering questions about the possible electrification of the MX-5, the executive responded: “By 2030 all of our products will have some type of form of electrification. This of course also includes our sports car. However, I cannot specify when it will come. installed a battery on the MX-5.”
