Toyota and Idemitsu together for the development of solid-state batteries

Toyota has recently announced an ambitious strategy linked to the development of new generation batteries for < strong>electric cars. As we have seen, the Japanese car manufacturer is working on different types of batteries that will debut starting from 2026.

Among the technologies it is working on, there is also that of solid state batteries. These batteries, on paper, promise to make electric cars make an important leap forward in terms of autonomy and charging. According to the roadmap shared by Toyota, the objective is to be ready for commercial use by 2027-28. In the past, the Japanese brand had said it wanted to introduce these batteries first on hybrid models. Now, however, the focus is on mainly aimed at new generation electric cars. As promised, thanks to these batteries, the cars will be able to have an autonomy of over 1,000 km. Furthermore, it will only take 10 minutes to go from 10% to 80% of the charge.

THE DEVELOPMENT PLAN

In terms of the development of solid state batteries, now comes an interesting news ;. Toyota, in fact, announced that it had signed a collaboration agreement with Idemitsu Kosanto work together on the development of mass production technology for solid electrolytes, improving productivity and the creation of a supply chain, to achieve mass production of the new batteries.

The two companies have therefore outlined a plan that will bring to the launch of the first generation of solid state batteries expected, as mentioned, in 2027/2028. Plan divided into 3 phases. The first involves the improvement of the solid electrolyte, as well as the design of a pilot plant for the production of solid electrolytes. The second, however, involves the construction and start-up of production of the pilot plant. Furthermore, Toyota will take care of to design the models that will have the new batteries.

In the third phase, however, the companies they will study the mass production of new solid-state batteries. Toyota is trying to recover lost ground to Tesla and Chinese rivals like BYD in the electric vehicle race. He claimed to have found a new technology that solves the reliability problems and solid-state battery life. All that remains is to wait for the developments of this project.
