NIO strengthens its activities of production of electric propulsion systems thanks to Comau. The Turin company, in fact, has designed and implemented a flexible automation solution specifically dedicated to the third generation induction and permanent magnet motors of the Chinese car manufacturer.
Comau , more in detail, it has supplied production lines for electric motors, production lines for transmission and assembly lines dedicated to inverters. According to what has been said, the new production lines will reach a capacity of up to 100% by the end of 2024. production at full capacity of 1 million units.
The new electric powertrains will be used in coupé and electric SUVs from NIO, as well as on selected models of its ALPS sub-brand. Comau says its automation solution offers flexibility and scalability, allowing the customer to adapt their production environment to the different process parameters necessary for new products.
The collaboration between Comau and NIO is A "new adapter with zero-point positioner" has also been developed. which unifies design, process and control standards, allowing you to satisfy different assembly requirements, maintaining maximum flexibility.
The production infrastructure developed by the Turin company also includes robots guided by 3D vision systems that move autonomously between workstations, moving components and materials. Alan Zeng, Senior Vice President of NIO, commented:
When it comes to implementing cutting-edge technological solutions, experience and know-how play a decisive role in the success of the project. We have been deeply impressed by Comau's extensive experience in assembling electric propulsion systems throughout our collaboration. This innovative solution has proven reliability in supporting the development of the project, helping us to overcome various challenges and achieve the desired results. Our work followed a joint engineering approach, which promotes close collaboration on both sides and efficiently guides the progress of the project. This mode operational not only guarantees the progress of work and cost control, but also the quality, performance and reliability of the system. of the final product.
Jeff Yuan, Comau Head of Countries Cluster APAC, added:
Considering the rapid growth of vehicles powered by new energy sources in China, a market where production rates and sales volumes in the first half of 2023 increased by 42.4% and 44.1% respectively, the demand for electric propulsion systems is increased significantly. Our joint effort with NIO to create a highly automated manufacturing environment has enabled the customer to increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve the performance of its next-generation EDS technology.
