Stellantis and Samsung SDI: new 2.8 billion battery factory in the USA

Stellantis and Samsung SDI had announced that they wanted to jointly build a second battery factory in the United States in addition to the one already planned in Kokomo, Indiana. The two companies that formed the StarPlus Energy joint venture for the management of the plants have provided further details on the project of the second plant dedicated to the production of batteries.

STARTS IN 2027

The new factory will be also built in Kokomo. Overall, for this project3.2 billion dollars (2.8 billion euros) will be invested. The system will allow to create 1,400 new jobs. Therefore, the total investment for both factories will be of over 6.3 billion dollars (5.5 billion euros) and in total 2,800 new jobs will be created. Once fully operational, the new factory will be able to count on a capacity production of 34 GWh, therefore, slightly higher than that of the other Kokomo plant (33 GWh) whose opening is expected by the first quarter of 2025.

Therefore, the capacity Combined annual production of Kokomo battery factories will reach the 67 GWh. This new second plant, if there are no delays to the schedule, will begin. its activities productive in 2027, 2 years after the first. The new factory will be the sixth battery production plant in the world to support the ambitious electrification program outlined in Dare Forward 2030.

We remind you that Stellantis' industrial plan includes the objective of reaching 100% of the sales mix with battery electric vehicles (BEV) in Europe and 50% with BEV cars and light commercial vehicles in the United States by 2030. To achieve this, the automotive group needs to secure capacity of 400 GWh of batteries per year. Mark Stewart, COO of Stellantis North America, commented:

Our battery manufacturing ecosystem forms the foundation of our electrification strategy and our great partners Samsung SDI, the State of Indiana and the Municipality of Indiana of Kokomo have made compelling arguments to locate our sixth gigafactory in Kokomo. BEVs for our brands in North America play an important role in our drive to deliver mobility clean, safe and accessible for all and achieve our ambitious goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2038.

Yoon-ho Choi, President and CEO of Samsung SDI, added:

Thanks to the construction of the second factory for the production of StarPlus Energy batteries, Samsung SDI will realize its largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing base in North America. We expect that Stellantis brand vehicles powered by Samsung SDI batteries will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies, which will help accelerate the United States' transition to an era of electric vehicles.
