In 2022, Hyundai and IVECO had signed an agreement to develop hydrogen-powered buses. As a result of this partnership, the two companies presented the IVECO BUS E-WAY H2 at Busworld 2023 in Brussels. This is a new bus equipped with Fuel Cell technology.
The new model will expand the the zero-emission IVECO BUS range for cities, which is already includes latest generation battery electric vehicles.
AUTONOMY OF 450 KM
According to the first information shared by the two companies, E-WAY H2 is a low-floor city bus 12 meters long. Its powertrain is composed of an electric motor capable of delivering 310 kW. The unit is powered by a fuel cell system supplied by HTWO, a Hyundai Group company, and by a battery with a capacity of of 69 kWh supplied by FPT Industrial which is part of the Iveco Group. To power the Fuel Cell system there are 4 tanks that offer a combined storage of 7.8 kg of hydrogen.
The two companies let it be known that under normal operating conditions, the autonomy of the bus is of 450 km. The E-WAY H2 allows both hydrogen refueling and battery charging from the charging station. This “hybrid” system, explain Hyundai and IVECO, not only optimizes the way in which the vehicle is powered, but also helps the on-board battery pack and the fuel cell system to achieve maximum efficiency and durability.
The E-WAY H2 will be produced in the IVECO BUS factories in Annonay (France) and Foggia (Italy). Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle & Hydrogen Business of Hyundai, commented:
