Dear flights: Ryanair's CEO attacks the decree that caps fares

Exuberant interview with Corriere della Sera with Ryanair's CEO, Michael O'Leary, who defined as "garbage" the recent Asset and Investment law decree within which there is a rule which, in an attempt to combat high flight prices, limits the maximum variation in fares for national connections with the islands or during periods of peak demand.

According to the manager of the main European air carrier, which is second in the world and first in Italy for the number of passengers transported, the rule which sets the maximum variation for fares at 200% of the average priceit goes against European rules on prices set by the market and is inapplicable, given the impossibility of to evaluate an average price. For this reason he stated that Ryanair has no intention of respecting the provision and is I'm sure he will come rejected by Europe.

In the meantime, however, Ryanair has started a reduction of domestic flights to the islandswith an operation that O'Leary justified by blaming the very decree that his company should not respect. Hence the 8-10% reduction in connections with Sardinia and the future 10% reduction in connections with Sicily, with the consequent increase in the price of tickets for numerous national flights in contrast with the intent of the decree. However, international flights, completely unrelated to the decree, will increase with new routes at Malpensa and Orio al Serio airports.

Is not serious; It is clear how much of this maneuver corresponds to the decision to respect the decree, despite the manager's words to the contrary, but another statement, which also sounds like a threat, points in this direction. According to what O'Leary stated on the sidelines of a press conference at the Rose Garden Hotel in Rome, this situation will continue. until the decree is in force.

To be clear it is the manager's resentment towards rules that are based on an ENAC report(National Civil Aviation Authority) on the increase in the price of flights, defined as rubbish. According to O'Leary, in this period all prices rise and the impact of the pandemic should not be forgotten. Useless controversy, therefore, for the CEO who defined the provision as something "done just for the sake of doing" before leaving for holidays. Furthermore, 0'Leary also responded regarding the suspicion that fares may change based on the device used to purchase a ticket:

We only have one “algorithm”. If the flight is filling up as expected the prices go up. If it doesn't happen we have to reduce tariffs. We don't give a damn… the type of mobile phone one is using. We have to fill the planes. – Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair

As regards the new international routes on Malpensa and Orio al Serio, according to what was reported by Repubblica, there are 10 destinations and they are Belfast, Brussels, Cluj, Iasi, Kaunas, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Lublin, Rovaniemi and Tirana. Furthermore, the number of other flights is increasing for 30 routes already existing and increasing, with the creation of 60 jobs, also the fleet of aircraft in Milan with the addition for the winter 2023/2024 of two Boeing 737s, one on Malpensa and one on Orio al Serio .
