Stellantis, e-fuel tests completed: 28 million cars compatible

Stellantis has confirmed more than once. times the commitment to sell 100% battery electric vehicles in Europe by 2030. However, he believes that e-fuels could represent an interesting opportunity for the future. to reduce emissions from the circulating fleet. A massive adoption of e-fuels, according to Stellantis, would offer endothermic vehicle owners a simple option to decarbonise their cars without the need for a fuel injection system. to replace them, to upgrade the engine fuel system or to wait for a new infrastructure network.

Precisely for this reason, the automotive group had begun to test e-fuels on its engines at its research centers throughout Europe. Tests that have now concluded with very positive results. In fact, yes it is. arrived at the conclusion that 24 European vehicle engine families of Stellantis sold since 2014, equal to 28 million vehicles on the road, are ready for the use of e-fuels, without the need for of any modification.

THE TESTS

Therefore, as many as 28 million Stellantis vehicles on the road could already be used. now use e-fuels without having to make any modifications to the engine. The tests, says the automotive group, were conducted thanks to the collaboration of Aramco, an oil company, which supplied the “drop-in” type e-fuels, i. obtained by reacting CO2, captured directly from the atmosphere or from an industrial plant, with renewable hydrogen.

According to Stellantis, the use of these synthetic fuels is the best choice. potentially capable of reducing carbon dioxide emissions of existing internal combustion vehicles by at least 70% over their entire life cycle, compared to conventional fuels. Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer of Stellantis, explains:

Our priority is it is provide mobility; with zero emissions for all, with particular attention to electrification, while our collaboration with Aramco constitutes an important and complementary step in this path for the fleet of vehicles on the road. We are exploring all ways to strengthen our ambitious strategy of becoming a company capable of achieving zero emissions by 2038. The “drop-in” can have a massive and near-impressive impact. on reducing the CO2 emissions of their existing vehicle fleet, giving our customers an easy and cost-effective option to reduce their carbon footprint, as simple as choosing a different fuel pump at the petrol station, without having to make modifications to your vehicles.
