The recharging network for electric cars in Italy continues to grow. According to the new Motus-E report, there are 45,210 charging points for public usefor electric vehicles. In the second quarter of 2023 alone, 4,037 new charging points were installed. Overall, between January and June, 8,438 new charging points were installed for public use, compared to 4,680 in the same period of 2022 (+80%).
An increase that according to Motus-E should accelerate further thanks to the infrastructures that will be built through the PNRR.
THE CHARGING NETWORK IN ITALY
Entering more in detail of the new report, of the current 45,210 recharging points, 39,759 are in alternating current with powers equal to or lower than 43 kW, 2,233 in direct current with powers between 44 and 99 kW and 3,045 with powers greater than 100 kW. Overall, 14,506 recharging points were installed in the last 12 months.
At macro-area level, the South continues to recover ground. In fact, the South and Islands account for 23% of the total Italian charging points, bypassing the Center (21%) and gnawing another percentage point on Northern Italy (56%).
Looking at the diffusion of the infrastructure at the regional level, in first place we find Lombardy (7,657 charging points), ahead of Piedmont (4,514), Veneto (4,420), Lazio (4,351) and Emilia-Romagna (3,966). However, it is Campania to grow faster; of all in the second quarter of 2023 (+54 compared to the first quarter of the year). Then we find Lombardy (+15%), Liguria (+11%), Lazio (+8%) and Sicily (+7%).

The report then dwells on recharging on the motorwaywith the infrastructure finally starting to grow in a major way. According to Motus-E, at the end of June there were 657 charging points (+422 compared to a year ago) distributed in 121 service areas out of a total of 476. Over 77% of motorway charging points have a power exceeding 43 kW and 58% exceed 150 kW.
HOME CHARGING
For the first time, the Motus-E report also examines data on devices for home chargingwhich have grown 8 times in just two years, thanks also to the incentives connected to the energy requalification of buildings. The recharging points for electric cars present in Italian homes in fact exceeded 400,000, with 304,000 installations linked to building bonuses.
According to the association, there will be a number of recharging points. an acceleration as soon as the incentives, already available, are made available. allocated and awaiting only the implementing decrees, for charging infrastructure for domestic use for private individuals and condominiums. Resources which, the association points out, will also benefit the national economy given that more of the 70% of the wallboxes sold in Italy are in fact produced in the peninsula and over 50% of the turnkey cost is the prerogative of the installation, carried out by local companies and professionals.
