ACI, the Italian fleet? too old: 1 car out of 11 has more? of 30 years

The Italian vehicle fleet is one too old and too polluting. This, in summary, is what it is. what emerges from the publication "Self-portrait 2022" of the ACI in which a photograph of the vehicle fleet of our country is taken. Is not serious; certainly the first time that the excessive age of cars on Italian roads has been talked about. This time, however, ACI provides further, very interesting data.

FEW 'ECO-FRIENDLY' CARS

According to the publication, there are even 3 million and 700 thousand cars (9.3% of the total) registered before 1993. It is mostly about of Euro 0 with at least 30 years of life. The "largest" elderly” they are Campania (17.6%), Calabria (15.2%) and Sicily (13.5%). Those most “Young”, on the other hand, are Valle D’Aosta (2.3%), Trentino Alto Adige (2.6%), both due to the high percentage of cars registered for rental use and Veneto (5.8%) .

The Italian park is one of the most popular parks in Italy. therefore really very old and according to what emerges from the publication, also not very ecological given that there are still very few cars that ACI defines as “ecological“.

  • LPG: 2,900,799 (7.2% of the car fleet)
  • Methane: 971,583 (2.4% of the car fleet)
  • Hybrid: 1,556,620 (3.9% of the car fleet)
  • Electric : 158,131 (0.4% of the car fleet)

Overall, these cars represent 13.9% of the total against 12.4% in 2021. The largest regions; "green" (in percentage values, with respect to the total fleet in circulation) are Marche and Emilia Romagna at 23.7% and 23% respectively. Following Valle D’Aosta (20.7%) and Umbria (17.9%). The less "green" on the other hand, Sardinia (4.7%) and Calabria (5.6%) are.

In absolute terms, however, Lombardy can; count on the most high number of cars that ACI defines as ecological (800,000). Followed by Emilia Romagna (680 thousand) and Lazio (590 thousand). At the bottom of the ranking we find Molise (24,000) and Basilicata (34,000).

As strictly regards electrified cars (electric and hybrid), the increase between 2021 and 2022 it is was even 49%, with peaks of 158% in Valle D’Aosta and 72% in Trentino (thanks to the presence of rental companies) and 64% in Tuscany. However, despite the strong growth, these cars represent only 4.3% of the circulating fleet.

Overall, at the end of 2022, according to ACI, the Italian circulating fleet would be made up of 40,213,061 cars.
