The EU's so called the Digital Services Act (DSA) seeks to limit freedom of expression online by handing out extreme fines to social media companies that do not immediately delete criticism of immigration and other types of “hate” and “disinformation”.

Now the European Commission has compiled a list of 19 social media that are singled out as particularly important targets for censorship measures.

On the list is Twitter, which has been particularly in the EU's eye after Elon Musk took over the platform. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton has previously threatened to shut down Twitter in Europe if Musk faces freedom of expression on the platform.

The other targets of Brussels' political censorship are Google Maps, Google Play, Google Search, Google Shopping, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon's Marketplace, Apple's App Store, Linkedin, Bing, booking.com, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tiktok, Wikipedia and Zalando.

– We believe that these 19 online platforms and search engines have become systematically relevant and that they have a particular responsibility for to make the internet safer, says Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market.

The named companies risk fines of as much as six percent of their global turnover if they do not comply with censorship requirements.
