Crimes committed against a journalist “is an attack not only against the victim of the crime, but by extension also against democracy and society as such”.

This is what the government writes today on its website.

The government therefore proposes that there should be a special basis for increasing the penalty for crimes committed “against a person because he or she or someone close to him has professionally carried out news reporting or other journalism”. and assault against a civil servant shall also apply if someone assaults an exerciser of “a certain socially useful function” in the performance of his or her duties. Practitioners of a certain socially beneficial function are healthcare personnel, social service personnel, emergency service personnel and education personnel within the school system and university.

The government also proposes that the maximum penalty for breach of confidentiality should be increased and that a serious breach of confidentiality should be introduced .

The changes to the law are proposed to enter into force on 1 August 2023.
