The majority of young people in Sweden moves too little and previous studies have shown that children's participation decreases during junior high school.
The researchers from Gothenburg wanted to see how common this is already in middle school and made a survey.
– The answers showed that about a third of the children had truanted from school sports at one point or more during the last semester, says Carolina Lunde, one of the researchers behind the study, in a press release.
Those who truanted were more dissatisfied with their bodies and were significantly more concerned about how these appear in social contexts than those who did not truant.
They were also less satisfied with their bodies' physical abilities.
