The goal was what they wanted from Donyell Mallen at Borussia Dortmund. First he dropped two opponents, then quickly got into position and made it 1-0 for BVB against Union Berlin. The Dutchman showed all his advantages in the 28th minute, which is why the club officials from Dortmund transferred around 30 million euros to PSV Eindhoven for Malen in the summer of 2020. Berlin's Kevin Behrens (61st) was able to equalize in the meantime, Dortmund's attacker Youssoufa Moukoko (79th) made it 2-1.

The hopes after Malen's commitment were high, he had been brought in and should help BVB move a little closer to the league leader FC Bayern Munich. But Malen never really arrived at the Dortmunders. Until mid-March, the 24-year-old had only scored one goal of the season in the Bundesliga. In the past three games, however, the knot has burst, in each game Malen has scored a goal. Is everything getting better now?

No particular record

Doubts are at least appropriate. Malen also had a phase last season when he suddenly scored. In November and December 2021 he scored five goals in six games – but only two more followed by the end of the season. Far too little for the footballing possibilities of the Dutch winger. During his time at BVB, Malen scored 14 goals and eleven assists in 66 appearances in all competitions (Bundesliga, DFB Cup, Champions League) – not exactly the record of a top player.

Malen's contract is still running until 2026 in Dortmund, but there are some indications that the strong sprinting offensive player could leave BVB much earlier. Sevilla FC from the Spanish La Liga are said to be very interested in Mal. A change as early as this summer cannot be ruled out.

In the past few weeks, Malen has been working to ensure that the wind could turn around in terms of an early change. And the national player of the Netherlands still has seven more Bundesliga games to play in Dortmund. continue to advertise on their own behalf.
