The survey by the television channel BFM-TV shows that 55 percent of the voters would vote for Le Pen if she faced Macron in a presidential election today.

It is a dramatic change from the election a year ago, when Macron won with 58.5 percent of the vote to Le Pen's 41.5.

According to the head of the polling institute Elabe, which conducted the survey, Le Pen is advancing in all voter categories and her progress in public opinion is described as “spectacular” .

Emmanuel Macron is deeply unpopular among many French people, not least after his raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, which has led to widespread protests.
