Carola tells SvD that it is time for the Swedes to “wake up” now:
– I don't think you can say come and live as you want in our country. It is not cowardly to protect Sweden's traditions and sing Den blomstertid at school graduations. Sometimes I get completely despondent about developments.
As an example, she cites the shootings and the police who “just call for help”.
– We let in and should be kind to people who have a completely different ideology, where it is even stated in their writings that it is okay to lie to unbelievers, Carola continues.
SvD's journalist points out here that there are probably “some” who would probably call this reasoning “xenophobic”.
To this Carola replies that “there is a reason why there are nations and national borders, we have different cultures with different ways of seeing”.
She further states that few are as open to strangers as she is, but that you have to be “wise about it all”.
Carola broke through in 1983 when, as a 16-year-old, she won the Melodifestivalen with a song called Främling . The song came in third place in the Eurovision Song Contest.
In 1991, Carola won Melodifestivalen again, this time with the song Fångad av en stormvind. With that song, she also won the Eurovision Song Contest that year.
