Sweden has expelled 1,100 British citizens since Brexit became a reality, according to figures from Eurostat.
Thus, Sweden has accounted for nearly half of the deportations to Great Britain from EU countries. The total figure for the entire EU is 2,610.
A case that has received a lot of attention in both Sweden is Alzheimer's sufferer Kathleen Poole, 74. The elderly cannot speak, walk or eat without help. Because of Brexit, she has received a deportation order after living in Sweden for 18 years.
British politician Hilary Benn tells The Guardian that the decision to deport Kathleen Poole is “deeply shocking” and calls for the EU -commission puts an end to the Swedish authorities' plan.
– What on earth do the Swedish authorities think they are doing? says Benn.
Countries such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Luxembourg, meanwhile, did not deport a single British citizen in 2021 or 2022. After Sweden, the Netherlands accounted for the second largest number of deportations, 720, followed by Malta (135) and France (115).
