Foreign. Flanked by Albania, Romania and Montenegro, the Finnish flag was raised today in solemn fashion at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. The era of military non-alignment in Finnish history is thus over.

The Finnish flag was raised on Tuesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Finland's membership “is not directed at anyone”, says President Sauli Niinistö in a statement about the membership.
– Nor does it change the foundations or goals of Finland's foreign and security policy. Finland is a stable and predictable Nordic country that strives for peaceful conflict resolution. Principles and values that are important to Finland will also remain the guiding star for our foreign policy in the future.
He also promises to continue helping neighboring Sweden join the US-led military alliance.
– Finland's membership is not complete without Sweden. The persistent work for rapid Swedish membership continues. Likewise, our close cooperation to build common security and common defense throughout the Nordics continues.
