The Finnish flag was raised on Tuesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Finland's membership “is not directed at anyone”, says President Sauli Niinistö in a statement about the membership.

– Nor does it change the foundations or goals of Finland's foreign and security policy. Finland is a stable and predictable Nordic country that strives for peaceful conflict resolution. Principles and values ​​that are important to Finland will also remain the guiding star for our foreign policy in the future.

He also promises to continue helping neighboring Sweden join the US-led military alliance.

– Finland's membership is not complete without Sweden. The persistent work for rapid Swedish membership continues. Likewise, our close cooperation to build common security and common defense throughout the Nordics continues.
