Sanna Marin's social democratic party only comes in third place in the election.

Both the Samlingspartiet (roughly equivalent to the Moderates) and the True Finns (roughly equivalent to the Sweden Democrats) had more votes when over 95 percent of the votes had been counted late on Sunday evening.

The Gathering Party looks to be the largest with 20.6 percent of the votes , followed by the True Finns with 20.1 percent and the social democratic SDP with 19.9 percent.

In Finland it is a tradition that the largest party gets the first chance to try to form a government, and the leader of the Coalition Party Petteri Orpo has declared as the winner.

– You know what? It was a great victory, Orpo said when he began his speech on election night.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin has admitted that she has been defeated.

– Democracy has spoken, the Finnish people have her vote, she says.

All of the three largest parties have progressed compared to the last election: The Coalition Party with over three percent, the True Finns with almost three percent and the SDP with just over two percent.
