Xcode 14.1 or newer required for apps

Apple has warned developers that they will face stricter requirements from April 25. Developers can quickly release a (bug fix) update of the app if they have not yet moved to Xcode 14.1. After that date it is mandatory to use Xcode 14.1 or newer. Version 14.2 is currently available for download in the Mac App Store and version 14.3 will be released soon. Apple periodically updates the requirements to deliver new and updated apps. This is to ensure they always use the latest development tools.

The requirement for Xcode 14.1 has to do with compatibility with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and the like. For those unfamiliar with it, Xcode is the tool developers use to create apps for Apple's various platforms, including iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. You need a Mac with at least macOS Monterey 12.5 or newer. It includes tools for a variety of new features, such as Live Activities and Metal 3. WatchOS 9 includes support for richer watch face complications and VoIP calls. Anyone can download this tool for free and use it to develop apps, but if you also want to make your app available in the App Store, you will have to take out a paid developer account of €100 per year. This also immediately entitles you to install the latest developer betas, of which iOS 16.5 beta has just been released.

Developing apps can be done in a playful way with Swift Playgrounds or with Apple's own Swift programming language. But even with Playgrounds you can create a real app that you can sign up for the App Store review process.

If you want to create your own apps, you need to join the Apple Developer Program. You can do that for free, but if you also want to distribute your apps via the App Store, you will have to pay in most cases. That is how it works.
