Auto market Europe 2023, the month of February closes on a positive note

For the European Union car market, the month of February 2023 yes it is concluded with growth of 11.5%. As communicated by ACEA, the association of European car manufacturers, these are 802,763 registrations against 719,783 in 2022. If we also want to include the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries, 902,775 cars were registered in February 2023 against 804,414 in the last year, equal to a growth of 12.2%.

All major European Union markets ended February with growth. In particular, those of Spain and Italy did very well with growth of 19.2% and 17.4% respectively. However, market volumes are still far from those of 2019, the period prior to the outbreak of the pandemic. In fact, in February 2019, EU (including UK) + EFTA countries, registrations had reached 1,114,692.


In the first two months of 2023, the European Union car market totaled 1,563,015 registrations, an increase of 11.4% compared to 2022. Looking at the four main EU markets, the Spain (+32.1%) and Italy (+18.2%) posted the largest gains, followed by France (+9.1%). Car registrations in Germany grew by just 0.2% in the two-month period. Including the United Kingdom and EFTA countries, in the first two months of 2023 there were 1,814,048 registrations, equal to a growth of 11.5%.

ELECTRIC CARS ARE GROWING

Very good electric cars in February 2023. More specifically, new registrations of BEVs in the EU increased by 39.7% to 97,300 cars, with a market share of 12.1% (9, 7% in February 2022).

With the exception of the Czech Republic (-3.2%) and Slovakia (-28.2%), all EU markets contributed to this growth. For example, Germany (+14.7%), France (+45.7%) and the Netherlands (+88.9%). Instead, registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles in the EU decreased by 7.4% to 57,569 cars sold. This drop – mainly due to the decline in sales of these models on the German market (-44.8%), following the end of the incentives.


Hybrid HEVs continue to do well with registrations up 22.3% to 204,883 units. This growth is – supported above all by the results of the four main markets of the European Union: Spain (+31.8%), France (+24.6%), Germany (+24.2%) and Italy (+23.9% ). As a result, HEV models achieved a market share of 25.5%, up from 23.3% in February 2022.

As of February 2023 registrations of petrol models are also growing. With +11.1%, they achieved a market share in the European Union of 36.9%, in line with that recorded in 2022. Spain (+19.0%), Italy (+16.3% ), Germany (+8.9%) and France (+7.7%) all contributed to this growth.

However, the downturn in the diesel car market continues in the EU (-8.4%), despite increases in some central European markets such as Poland (+18.9%) and the Czech Republic (+12.4%), as well as in Italy (+2, 2%). The EU market share of diesel models as of February 2023 is 50,000. by 15%.

As regards the automotive groups, again at the level of the European Union, the Volkswagen Group closed February 2023 with growth of 18.2%. Stellantis, on the other hand, closed the month with a +1.8%. The Renault Group did very well with an increase of 26.3%.
