The announcement came during a joint press conference with Finland's President Sauli Niinistö in Ankara.

– It is very important for all of Finland, said Niinistö.

According to Erdogan, Finland will have “an active role in NATO”.

< p>– Finland has taken concrete steps to fulfill its commitments in accordance with the trilateral agreement, Erdogan said.

The formal decision on the matter will be hammered out by the Turkish parliament.

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is not in Ankara, writes SVT Nyheter. However, he spoke on the phone with Sauli Niinistö before the visit.

Finland's part remains to be approved by Hungary, whose parliament, according to the ruling party Fidesz, will vote for Finnish entry into the defense alliance on March 27.
