Foreign. After failing to garner enough support for his pension reform in parliament, French President Emmanuel Macron is now using special powers to push through the proposal.

TwitterShare< p>The reform, which means that the retirement age is raised from 62 to 64 years, has encountered very strong opposition with large strikes and protests with millions of participants around France.

This can be compared to Sweden, where there were no demonstrations or debate when the retirement age was raised to 66 in January.

Nor in the National Assembly has the French government succeeded in gaining sufficient support for the legislation.

Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne now announces that the controversial pension reform will be implemented without a vote in the National Assembly. The government can do this by invoking a special article in the constitution.

The opposition members booed and sang the national anthem in protest when Borne made the announcement, writes BBC News.

– Resign! Resign! they chanted.
