Synology DS423+: The 4-bay NAS stays with Intel and does not rely on AMD

With the DS423+, Synology is relaunching the second NAS for a maximum of four drives in the 23 series after the DS923+ (test), after the DS723+ (test) and DS223 (test) for up to to two drives came onto the market. The change compared to its predecessor, the DS420+ (test), is again simple.

Change from J4025 to J4125

The only and most obvious change Synology makes to the DS423+ compared to the DS420+ is the processor change from the Intel Celeron J4025 to the Intel Celeron J4125. Both come from the Gemini Lake family and differ only in the number of cores. If the J4025 in the DS420+ offers two cores and two threads with a 2.0 GHz base and 2.9 GHz turbo clock, the J4125 has four cores and four threads with a 2.0 GHz base and 2.7 GHz turbo clock. The TDP remains unchanged at 10 watts, as does the production size of 14 nm. With the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600, transcoding in Plex is still supported.

However, this is the only change of the DS423+ compared to the DS420+. Connections and housing otherwise remain identical.

Same connections and only 2 GB RAM

This means the DS423+ will hold up to four 3.5″ or 2.5″ SATA drives, offer two 2280 slots for M.2 SSDs, and there are two USB-A ports – one on the front, one on the front at the back. It also has two 1 gigabit LAN interfaces, which have not changed with the new model. Synology also leaves the main memory untouched with 2 GB DDR4 SODIMM. If more RAM is to be used, the user can and must lend a hand, because the main memory can officially be expanded to up to six gigabytes.

No slot for 10 gigabit

Synology claims up to 226 MB/s reading and up to 224 MB/s writing when using both LAN interfaces. The DS423+ does not offer the option of upgrading to 10 gigabits via a PCIe slot.

The Synology DS423+ is available in stores starting today for a recommended retail price of 546.20 euros.
