Enel X and MIDAC together to build a battery recycling plant in Italy

The goal of Enel X and MIDAC is that of getting to build in Italy the first large lithium battery recycling plant for electric vehicles, industrial systems and stationary systems. The two companies – have made it known that they have started the activities; research and development together with other Italian and European companies and research institutions, including Enea. This initiative is part of the IPCEI European project on batteriesand will offer an important contribution to the development of a European lithium battery supply chain that is both sustainable and circular.

As the presence of electric cars on the market increases, the recycling of accumulators will play a major role in the future. an increasingly important role. important. According to what has been reported, it is estimated that in Europe, in 2030, there will be a growing number of children. a total volume of lithium batteries to be recycled of approximately 200,000 tons.

THE PROJECT

Within the scope of their competences, Enel X and MIDAC will begin to carry out a series of activities related to this project. In particular, they will work to develop a model based on the circularity of business. which will allow to transform end-of-life battery packs into raw materials to be used to make new cells, thus limiting the extraction of minerals and reducing the costs and environmental impact of the process.

More; in detail, Enel X will take care of the to study and develop the best technologies for the automatic disassembly of lithium batteries and their recycling process. Instead, MIDAC will develop ‘ the whole recycling process, initially at pilot project level. Subsequently, he will make the an industrial plant with a capacity of of at least 10,000 tons per year. Francesco Venturini, Head of Enel X, commented:

We are proud to be a partner in this challenging and strategic project aimed at creating a European battery supply chain. This project will allow the to create new markets and new opportunities; of growth for companies, combining efficiency, sustainability and and innovation and facilitating Europe in achieving a goal of crucial importance, such as greater independence in the procurement of raw materials.

Filippo Girardi, president of MIDAC, added:

We are developing and investing in innovative recycling processes to support the Italian and European lithium battery supply chain and to be able to make our contribution to the energy transition. We will start from recycling to get to the cells, our plants will be built in Italy to strengthen the Italian presence in the battery sector and create jobs and development throughout the country.

It is worth note that for Enel X this is the third IPCEI project on batteries in which it participates. The other two had been launched in 2020 and 2021 to promote the development of Digital Twin technology and other lithium-ion battery technologies to extend their life, reduce charging times, make them more efficient and more efficient. safer and more environmentally friendly.
