There was already initial information at the start of the year, now it's getting more concrete: Dell wants to ban “Made in China” from the US market. However, it is not as fast as recently claimed. In the meantime, it is more realistically until 2026 or 2027 instead of 2024 and should initially only affect products for the US market.
Dell says: USA first!
At the beginning of the year, Nikkei reported on Dell's intentions for the first time, but with the year 2024 for the changeover in production, it named a much too narrow time window. New information from Taiwan now makes the project a little more concrete and the new period should also be more realistic. Dell's first goal is to have products for the US market no longer come from China and, if possible, have them manufactured locally. But that alone takes a few years.
Chips make the beginning
As the Commercial Times explains, Dell delivers around 50 million notebooks and PCs per year, and it will not be possible to handle this volume outside of China any time soon. Dell knows that too and is planning a gradual change. By 2026, chips that are produced directly in China for Dell are to be sourced elsewhere. Parts are to follow later that will be manufactured by chip manufacturers in other countries, but whose (wafer) basis is still China.
The entire US range by 2027
The goal is to have the complete product range for the US market “China-free” by 2027. In 2025, an intermediate step of 60 percent should be reached. To do this, 35 to 40 percent of production has to be done outside of China. According to the report, this could reach a volume of up to 32 million units by 2027.
HP wants to further expand its China business
HP sees things completely differently: According to media reports in February, Dell's US competitor wants to further expand its business in China. Both the supplier industry and the Chinese market with many millions of potential customers should be addressed.
