The German anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” was awarded best international film and received a total of four Oscars. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was the evening's winner, winning seven Oscars.

The German Netflix production “Nothing New in the West” started the race for the world's most important film award with nine nominations, and the drama took home four coveted trophies. “Oh god, this means so much to us,” said director Edward Berger in his acceptance speech while accepting the Oscar for Best International Picture at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday evening (March 12, 2023 local time).
The anti-war film based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, which was released on Netflix in autumn 2022, also received awards for the best camera and the best production design. The film composer Volker Bertelmann – known as a musician under the name Hauschka – accepted the trophy for the best film music.
The film by director Edward Berger is only the fourth work from Germany to win the award for best international film – after “The Lives of Others”(2007), “Nowhere in Africa” (2003) and “The Tin Drum” (1980).

Three of the four acting prizes also went to the science fiction adventure. “Thanks to the academy, history is made here,” said Michelle Yeoh, winner of Best Lead Actress, in her acceptance speech. She beat two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for the drama “Tár.”
Malaysian-born Yeoh is the first Asian to win an Oscar in this category. “Ladies, don't let anyone tell you that your best days are behind you,” the 60-year-old said. In “Everything Everywhere All at Once” she plays the operator of a laundromat who suddenly finds herself in numerous parallel universes – and there she also meets Jamie Lee Curtis, who received the award for best supporting actress. Ke Huy won best supporting actor Quan excellent.
Brendan Fraser made a big comeback with “The Whale”
The Best Actor award completes a picturesque comeback story perhaps only Hollywood can write. Brendan Fraser, who did well in the 1990s with films like The Mummy, received an Oscar for his portrayal of an obese homosexual in the drama The Whale.
Fraser had largely withdrawn from the film business for years, after personal setbacks and numerous operations in a row for injuries sustained during shooting, he was suffering from depression. In a 2018 interview with GQ magazine, he reported that he had been sexually abused in 2003 by the then President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which awards the Golden Globes.
“I plan to I've been in this business for 30 years and things haven't come easy for me,” Fraser said at the Academy Awards. He thanked his director Darren Aronofsky for “throwing me a creative lifeline”.

Late-night talker Jimmy Kimmel led through the evening, who addressed the scandal of the previous year in his opening speech. At the time, superstar Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after making a joke on stage. “If someone becomes violent, they're presented with the best actor award and they're allowed to give a 19-minute speech,” Kimmel said mockingly. Smith was awarded the Oscar shortly after his assault last year and only days later was expelled from the Oscar academy.
