Is your chat list in WhatsApp full of older group conversations that haven't been said for years? WhatsApp wants to put an end to this with a future feature. We are working on a new cleaning function for groups, where you can set a kind of expiration date yourself.

WhatsApp groups are useful for staying in touch with, for example, your sports buddies, group of friends or people from the neighbourhood. But groups are also regularly created that are only used for a limited time. There is a good chance that there are a few groups in your chat list that have not been spoken for years, simply because the purpose for which the group was created has long since passed. Think, for example, of a dinner with colleagues or a neighborhood party. A new WhatsApp group expiration feature is going to help you clean up these kinds of conversations.
Clean up WhatsApp groups with this upcoming feature
The new feature, discovered in a beta by WABetaInfo, is called Expiring Groups and can be found in the group conversation settings. Each participant can use the function to set a time frame for themselves when this group is no longer relevant. It is therefore a kind of reminder to clean up groups and keep your chat list clearer.
When choosing the feature, you can choose an expiration date of one day or one week or choose your own custom date. It is not yet entirely clear how the function will continue to work after the expired date. The description shows that you are being reminded to clean up the group in question. It does not seem that the chat is automatically removed from your device and you are therefore not automatically removed from the group. So you may get a message to leave the group and delete the chat.
The function can therefore be set for each group member and is not an overarching group setting that applies to everyone.
