The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 8+8 cores was able to top the gaming benchmark charts in the test. But how fast the Ryzen 9 7900X3D with 6+6 cores, which was released at the same time, was unclear due to the lack of a sample. The editors are now providing the answer based on a commercially available CPU.

AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D: The 6+6 core CPU with 3D V-Cache under test
The first two Ryzen 7000 of the X3D series with soldered additional L3 cache are available since February 28th: Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D will follow on April 6th – most likely simply because the CPU should ultimately become the price-performance tip of the series for many gamers and the number of those who would choose a Ryzen 9 would be smaller.
AMD also left nothing to chance when the two Ryzen 9 were launched in parallel a week ago: Only the top model Ryzen 9 7950X3D was made available worldwide for testing in advance and not the 190 euro cheaper alternative Ryzen 9 7900X3D. But why?
Ryzen 9 7950X3D vs. Ryzen 9 7900X3D
The assumption was obvious that in this case it was not because the cheaper Ryzen 9 would dig the water out of the more expensive one, but really came with a tangible disadvantage for the customer, which could even disadvantage him in games compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D: At of the 12-core CPU, only 6 cores are active on both chiplets. So the Ryzen 9 7900X3D only has 6 cores with additional L3 cache, while 7950X3D and 7800X3D are equipped with eight of these cores. And reputation knows: Even in games today, 6 cores are often no longer sufficient to be able to deliver the highest performance.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D compared to the Ryzen 9 7950X3D in the testBut what's the deal on this theory? Is the Ryzen 9 7900X3D rightly still available from stock while the Ryzen 9 7950X3D is out of stock? Or is it different, after all, the 7900X3D has 12 cores, of which only six can use the 3D V-Cache?
ComputerBase has meanwhile obtained a Ryzen 9 7900X3D from the Berlin online shop Caseking.de and is investigating this question in the same test course that the Ryzen 9 7950X3D had to face.
Overview of key technical data
In addition to the configuration with 6+6 instead of 8+8 cores, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D also differ slightly in terms of clock rates: Like the X sister model, the 7900X3D is allowed on the chiplet (CCD) without a stacked L3 cache, for example clock only 5.6 instead of 5.7 GHz. In this case, there is no official information from AMD for the chiplet with 3D V-Cache.
Clock speeds in games (RTX 4090)
As for the 7950X3D, AMD has not given an official maximum clock for the CCD with L3 cache for the 7900X3D either. In the editorial test, 5.225 GHz proved to be the maximum clock of the CCD with 3D V-Cache in games – that's 50 MHz less than the larger 7950X3D.
The Ryzen 9 7900X3D was on average across all games with 5.036 MHz also 50 MHz behind the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D will officially clock a few MHz lower at 5.0 GHz, provided it does not exceed this clock in practice.

Test system and test methodology
Test system (including software and drivers) and test methodology correspond 1:1 the setup last used in the test of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. All details on the hardware used and the procedure can therefore also be found in this article. At this point, only the games used and their settings should be listed again.
RT Resolution “High”, RT Geometry “Very High”, RT View Distance “10”, The Callisto Protocoll Ultra Preset, FSR 2 “Performance” The Witcher 3 Maximum Graphic Details (“Highest+”), HairWorks “Off”, None RT, FSR 2 “Ultra Performance” Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Ultra Preset, FSR 2 “Ultra Performance”
A special case is Spider-Man Remastered. The title received an update immediately after the tests for the start of the X3D series were completed, which made all old measurements obsolete. However, recreating all the old results would not only have involved an enormous amount of effort, but would also have meant that the Core i9-13900KS would fall out of the loop – because the pattern is now back at Intel. On the other hand, removing the game from the course would have changed the rating slightly from the rating on the Ryzen 9 7950X3D test stored in many reader memories, which is only a week old, which in our experience causes a lot of confusion.
In order to avoid both, the editors estimated the value of the Ryzen 9 7900X3D considering the performance development from the old to the new patch level with the CPUs 7950X, 7950X3D and 7900X. If you don't want this value to be included in the rating, you can adjust the rating using the “Edit” button.
Game benchmarks in 720p on the GeForce RTX 4090
Yes, only six instead of eight in games thanks to the 3D V-Cache extremely fast cores make an average difference: the Ryzen 9 7950X3D can set itself apart from the Ryzen 9 7900X3D by 8 percent in the test course with 14 games. Without 3D V-Cache, the 7950X and 7900X are again on par. The average X3D advantage is therefore smaller for the smaller Ryzen 9 than for the larger one (12 vs. 19 percent).
That's enough for the title “second fastest Ryzen 7000 in games”. , but the 7900X3D does not place ahead of the Core i9-13900K(S) and Core i7-13700K – on average there is a tie with the i7.

A look at the results in the individual games shows that there are titles in which the 7900X3D simply benefits a little less than the 7950X3D, but also games in which the X3D hardly benefits compared to the X in contrast to the larger version. An example is Fortnite, which only features an “X3D Bonus” on the 7950X3D. Interestingly, Ghostwire: Tokyo also features a game on which the Ryzen 9 7900X3D acts faster than the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. All results were reproducible.

Conclusion
AMD didn't keep the Ryzen 9 7900X3D out of the tests for no reason at the start last week. Although this X3D CPU also clearly benefits from the 3D V-Cache soldered onto a chiplet compared to the X sister model, the fact that the CPU only has six instead of eight cores, which are particularly fast in games, dampens the increase in performance: “Only” 12 percent faster is the 7900X3D than the 7900X, the larger 7950X(3D) is 19 percent.
AMD's Ryzen 9 7900X3D offers 12 cores, 6 of which with 3D V-CacheNevertheless, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D the second fastest CPU from AMD in the course. So what's the problem?
There are two big points against the Ryzen 9 7900X3D from a gamer's perspective:
- The price: At 679 euros, the Ryzen 7 7900X3D costs 190 euros less than the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, but while the larger model presents itself as the fastest gaming CPU with very high application performance at an additional cost, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D is only on average on the Level of a Core i7-13700K, which is available for 250 euros less. A Core i9-13900K, which is also even cheaper, is faster with (undoubtedly higher consumption under load) – also in applications.
- The Ryzen 7 7800X3D: It would have to be the devil if it was likely to be a bit lower clocking Ryzen 7 7800X3D with “only” 8 cores (but all 8 of them with additional L3 cache) does not act faster than the Ryzen 9 7900X3D in games on average.
This makes the Ryzen 9 7900X3D definitely the faster choice for gamers compared to the Ryzen 9 7900X, but with a view to the in-house and Intel's competition, this variant has no arguments.
If you really want to benefit from the X3D bonus in comparison to Intel's offers, you have to go for the 7950X3D or, in the future, for the 7800X3D. The application performance then decides whether it has to be less than 500 euros (7800X3D) or almost 800 euros (7950X3D). Ultimately, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D is only the best option for buyers who want to combine the application performance of the 12 Zen 4 cores with maximum gaming performance, because 16 Zen 4 cores are not an option in terms of price. Purely from a gamer's perspective, there are better alternatives.
