Synology DS1823xs+: AMD Ryzen V1780B and 10GbE for the enthusiast NAS

With the DS1823xs+, Synology brings a compact server for up to eight drives, which relies on an AMD Ryzen V1780B, 10 gigabit network connection and 8 gigabytes of ECC memory ex works. The NAS can also be expanded with expansion cards via a PCIe slot.

Synology sees the new DS1823xs+ as a compact server for creative studios, small and medium-sized companies or IT enthusiasts , who, in addition to extensive backup solutions, also value a scalable system.

AMD Ryzen V1780B without iGPU

The main processor of the Synology DS1823xs+ is an AMD Ryzen V1780B, which offers four cores with eight threads and a base clock of 3.35 GHz. The maximum clock frequency is 3.6 GHz. The TDP can be configured between 35 and 54 watts. It is not known which setting Synology chooses. With the Ryzen Embedded V1000, which came onto the market in 2018, AMD relies on a modification of Raven Ridge, whereby the first Zen generation is still used. The V1780B chosen by Synology is a model without an integrated GPU, while other models, with the exception of the V1500B, rely on a Vega 3, Vega 8 or Vega 11 GPU.

ECC memory and 10 GbE

Synology equips the DS1823xs+ with 8 GB DDR4-ECC-SO-DIMM ex works, which can be expanded up to 32 gigabytes. The NAS also has four network interfaces on the back. One of these is a 10GbE RJ45 port, the other three are implemented at a maximum speed of 1Gbps, although one port can be used for out-of-band management, but not must. Wake-on-LAN is only supported via the 1 Gbit ports.

Synology puts the performance values ​​of the DS1823xs+ at “more than 3,100/2,600 MB/s sequential read/write throughput and 173,100/80,800 random read/write IOPS.”

USB, eSATA and PCIe

As for external connections, the DS1823xs+ offers three USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen1), two of which are placed on the back and one on the front, and two eSATA ports for up to two expansion units. Internally, a PCIe Gen3 slot is available for expansion cards.

8 + 2 drives

The DS1823xs+ supports up to eight 3.5″ or 2.5″ drives via the drive trays. NVMe SSDs in 2280 format can be installed via two M.2 slots, which can be configured as an SSD cache or, if Synology NVMe SSDs are used, also as a storage pool.

The desktop NAS measures 166 × 343 × 243 mm and weighs 6.2 kg. The system and drives are cooled by two 120 × 120 × 25 mm fans. An internal power pack serves as the power supply, the performance of which is not yet available to ComputerBase.

Price and availability

The suggested retail price of the Synology DS1823xs+ is 1,600 euros excluding or 1,904 euros including VAT. It is officially available in stores from today. The warranty is 5 years.
