Consumer prices in France rose by 7.2 percent year-on-year in February, driven by the increased costs for food and services.

It is the highest figure since France joined the euro cooperation.

In Spain, the corresponding figure ended up at 6.1 percent for February.

Analysts had estimated that inflation would remain unchanged at 7 percent in France and slow in Spain.

The figures give ammunition to those who argue that the ECB needs to take tougher measures to bring inflation under control, writes Bloomberg.
