Steve Jobs in 1984

The Steve Jobs Archive was founded in September 2022 by Tim Cook, Jony Ive and Steve Jobs' widow, Laurene Powell Jobs. It is intended as a tribute to Jobs to honor the memory of Jobs through a variety of activities. The organization hasn't done much yet, but today executive director Leslie Berlin comes out with a unique photo from 1984 of Steve Jobs. He looks with interest at someone using a Mac.

“We have so much to say,” writes Berlin. “But I want to start by sharing one of my favorite images from the collection. It's Steve in 1984 who discovered a Macintosh in the wild.” The black-and-white photo shows Jobs almost poking his nose through an office window to see a woman working on a Mac. Jobs had just been to a conference, and on the way back, this photo was taken by photographer Jean Pigozzi.

“On the night after the event, as they were walking down O’Keefe Avenue looking for a place to eat, Steve – a notoriously fast walker – abruptly,” says Pigozzi. “Someone was sitting behind a shop window working on a Macintosh. He had to take a closer look at that. How did this person use the Mac? Steve was so curious, so eager to understand better, that he almost doubled over.”

The woman uses an original Mac in an office, with a stack of boxes and an advertising poster from Apple's major competitor IBM farther down the window. The e-mail message from the Steve Jobs Archive doesn't just come at a random time, but on Steve Jobs' birthday. However, this is not mentioned in the email. Nor does the Archive say when we can expect more. You can read more about the Steve Jobs Archive here. You can also sign up for a newsletter here.

Tim Cook did pay attention to Steve Jobs's 68th birthday in a tweet.
