You may be wondering when Apple will release a new iMac. Unfortunately, there is no clear view of this yet, because a new iMac with an M3 chip would not arrive until the end of 2023 at the earliest.

In April 2021, after years of silence, Apple finally announced a brand new iMac. In addition to the brand new design, the iMac also made the leap to the Apple Silicon chip. It was the M1 version, Apple's first proprietary Mac chip. But we've already arrived at the M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max chips and it's been almost two years since the iMac was released. But according to Mark Gurman, we can't count on an early update.
‘New iMac not until the end of 2023 at the earliest’
In the question-and-answer section of his newsletter, Gurman says it doesn't look like there's going to be a new iMac anytime soon. He thinks that Apple will skip the M2 generation for the iMac and therefore opt for the M3 chip. But the question then is when the M3 chip will be ready. Apple released the M2 chip in June 2022, so it will be at least past the summer of 2023 before the M3 chip comes into sight. Mark Gurman therefore thinks that the new iMac with M3 chip could only be released at the end of 2023 at the earliest. But a release in 2024 is certainly not excluded.

Users of an older iMac who are looking for a new one can therefore only go to the 2021 model for the time being. Although it still performs very well and looks modern, we can imagine that you would rather not want an M1 version of a new Mac. In addition to the iMac, Apple also sells the M1 version of the MacBook Air, but a successor with an M2 version appeared in the summer of last year.
Besides the M3 chip, we expect few other improvements for a new iMac. The design will probably stay about the same. Further updates we expect include support for Wi-Fi 6E and more upgrade options with, for example, more storage and RAM. Incidentally, Apple is also said to be developing a larger new iMac, but its status is not entirely clear. We do not yet know which chip will be included and when this so-called iMac Pro will appear.
