Problems with latest Siri Remote and Apple TV persist: try these tips

For several months now, there have been many problems with the connection between the Apple TV and the latest Siri Remote. The problem seems to be with the Siri Remote with USB-C, which comes with the Apple TV 2022. There are some tips to (temporarily) solve the problem, but Apple itself still hasn't solved the problems on their side fixed. Apple released the new Apple TV 4K 2022 last fall. This includes a faster chip and more storage and that for a lower starting price. In addition, this model comes with a custom Siri Remote. This is identical in design and buttons to the 2021 model, but with a USB-C port instead of Lightning to charge it. But despite the fact that the Siri Remote is otherwise the same, there are serious connection problems with the Apple TV. Comments on iCulture, Reddit, and Apple's support forum complain extensively about the problems with the Siri Remote and the Apple TV. What's going on here?

Siri Remote 2022 and Apple TV 4K issues

The first reports of connection problems appeared shortly after the release of the new Apple TV 4K, in November 2022. The problems can be easily summarized: the connection between the Siri Remote and the Apple TV spontaneously breaks during use, causing the Apple TV can no longer be operated. Pressing the remote control does not create a new connection and charging the remote does not offer a solution either.

While Apple has a support article detailing what you can do to troubleshoot connectivity issues, none of this is a definitive solution. The only way to get connected again is to completely restart the Apple TV (for example, by unplugging it). The remote control can then work properly again for a few hours to a few days, but the connection can be lost again at any time.

We also experienced these problems with our copy. Often the connection simply drops completely, but sometimes the Apple TV responds with a considerable delay to the use of the remote control or that the Apple TV only responds when you hold the remote control close. The problem only seems to play with the latest Siri Remote with USB-C, at least in combination with the Apple TV 4K 2022 that the remote control comes with. The USB-C version of the Siri Remote can also be purchased separately, but it is unclear whether the problem also occurs if it is connected to another Apple TV. Fortunately, not everyone with the latest Apple TV suffers from these problems.

Connection problem has been going on for months

The connection problem with the Siri Remote and Apple TV has been going on for more than four months now. Apple has released several tvOS updates in the meantime, with tvOS 16.3.1 being the most recent version, but none of them offer a solution. Apple has not yet released any firmware updates for the Siri Remote itself. Meanwhile, Apple is silent, so it is unclear whether Apple is now aware of the problem and whether it is working on a solution. It is therefore wise to raise the issue and contact Apple Support.

Siri Remote disconnected? Try these tips

In addition to completely restarting the Apple TV by unplugging it, you can also try one of these methods. Sometimes one of these ways helps to temporarily reconnect, but unfortunately it is not a permanent solution:

  • Restart remote control: Press and hold the TV button and volume down button at the same time for five seconds. Then wait five to ten seconds until a Disconnected message appears. Eventually, the remote will reconnect on its own.
  • Repair remote: Hold the remote close to Apple TV and press and hold the back and volume up buttons for five seconds. Then place the Siri Remote on top of the Apple TV to pair them again.

If the remote control is broken and these methods fail, you can also use your iPhone to control the Apple TV. Then go to Settings > Remote and Bluetooth and select the disconnected remote. Then choose the option to forget the remote control and pair it again.

As mentioned, all these methods only temporarily solve connection problems with the Siri Remote and Apple TV. If you still have an older generation of Siri Remote at home, you can link it as an alternative and use it temporarily. As soon as there is more clarity about a definitive solution, you can read it on iCulture.
