Weekly review and outlook: Hogwarts Legacy beats paid sharing on Netflix

In the past sixth calendar week, two topics in particular dominated the interest of the readers on ComputerBase: The test for the newly released magic adventure Hogwarts Legacy and – once again – the plans of the streaming provider Netflix to restrict the common practice of account sharing.

Hogwarts Legacy is the big topic

Hogwarts Legacy is currently attracting players like magic: on Saturday afternoon the mark of 750,000 simultaneous players was broken on Steam; the title tops numerous charts and receives plenty of positive reviews – the hype is real. On closer inspection, however, there are a few inconsistencies.

On the one hand, the hardware hunger is very large, especially when playing in higher resolutions and ray tracing is activated. The test for Hogwarts Legacy shows, for example, that even on a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti (test) when playing in UHD with DLSS, the texture details have to be reduced – the 900-euro graphics card from January is already reaching the limits of its rightly controversial memory expansion . Only with a graphics card with 16 GB does the game run smoothly with maximum texture details in UHD.

On the other hand, all current benchmarks should be treated with caution anyway, because a day 1 patch is apparently still missing, although Hogwarts Legacy has been able to be played for a few days. And the two major graphics card manufacturers, on the other hand, do not have a Day 1 driver ready: Nvidia has made a new driver available for download, but the release notes and Nvidia itself do not mention Hogwarts Legacy. And AMD is practically dead: There is no new driver, no statement of any kind and a request from the editors has remained unanswered so far. Intel, on the other hand, offers a day-1 driver exclusively and of all things.

And so Hogwarts Legacy represents an optically really successful implementation of the Harry Potter universe, but the graphics are not perfect or appropriate to the hardware requirements. The implementation of ray tracing requires a lot of performance, but is not a highlight. Upsampling, on the other hand, is practically mandatory and Hogwarts Legacy is currently struggling with a number of technical construction sites that shouldn't actually exist in an AAA production. In addition, the game does not set new standards in terms of gameplay; there are numerous better alternatives in the open world genre. Hogwarts Legacy works primarily as a target group game for Harry Potter fans.

When it comes to news, Netflix has managed – again – to land at the top of the list of most read news and notes. The streaming provider began taking action in the first European countries this week to restrict account sharing across household boundaries. For this purpose, users should name a main location and, for example in Spain, pay around 6 euros for an additional viewer outside their own four walls.

CB radio and an outlook for the next week

In the ComputerBase podcast CB-Funk, Jan and Fabian don't discuss a whole smorgasbord of topics this time, but go all-in GeForce RTX 4000 laptop GPUs. What is behind Nvidia's mobile RTX 4000 graphics cards, how fast are they compared to the desktop models, what influence do the TGP and the MUX switch have and what is important to consider when buying? Answers to all these questions and finally, as the icing on the cake, there are also assessments of dates and prices for AMD's Ryzen 7000X3D in the podcast.

CB radio can't be used only play via the embedded Podigee player, but also conveniently listen in the podcast apps of your choice. The ComputerBase podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music and Deezer. CB radio can also be integrated into most podcast players via RSS.
