German Bundestag: Study investigates ChatGPT impact on education

The Bundestag wants to investigate the effects of AI language models such as ChatGPT on education and research. The Committee for Education, Research and Technology Assessment commissioned a corresponding study.

“We need a comprehensive overview of the technical, ethical and social impact of ChatGPT on education and Science,” says Kai Gehring from the Greens as chairman of the committee for education, research and technology assessment. The study is prepared by the Office for Technology Assessment, which is operated by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Study as basis for Bundestag debate

The study should then be the basis for being able to evaluate the opportunities and risks for the education and research area in the Bundestag, which results from the complex language models such as GPT from OpenAI or LaMDA from Google. The overview should range from school to science to the further education sector. In addition to the technical effects, the study should also deal with social and ethical aspects.

The paper should be available in April. Then the Bundestag Committee for Education, Research and Technology Assessment wants to use the report as a basis for discussing ChatGPT and possible effects of the new language-processing AI systems in a public meeting.

AI language models and education: What are exams still worth?

Since OpenAI published ChatGPT in November, the consequences for the education sector have been discussed. In the academic field in particular, the question arises to what extent certain forms of examinations such as homework and homework still make sense if the AI tools can do relevant parts of the work.

ChatGPT has already released a classifier that is supposed to distinguish AI-written from human texts. However, the hit rates are not too high. Recognition is also made extremely difficult if people manually adjust the AI-generated texts again.

AI language models are on everyone's lips

The hype surrounding ChatGPT continues. This picked up speed again last week when Microsoft presented how the AI language models should be integrated into the Bing search engine and the Edge browser. Google followed suit and shortly after Microsoft presented Google Bard as a competitor.
