Mercedes-Benz has started distributing a free OTA update that now brings the new zero-layer user interface to the current C- and S-Class as well. The manufacturer first introduced the UI with direct access to important functions of the MBUX, curated by the operating system according to the situation, with the EQS and EQE.
Zero Layer stands for a user interface in which users no longer have to navigate into the depths of the system in order to access important or currently relevant functions. Instead, these functions are presented by the MBUX directly on the first level of the operating system for quicker access. The corresponding functions are shown in tiles that are positioned below a large map. According to Mercedes-Benz, navigation is the most important functional area for users alongside radio and media and, after the OTA update, takes up the center of the screen unit.
More than 20 functions are offered depending on the situation
The new selection tiles are arranged by the operating system according to the situation and appear, for example, in the case of repetitive patterns or depending on the location. MBUX should automatically suggest personalized infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions to suit the respective driving situation. For example, if you have a phone call with the same person every night, this quick access feature may appear on the top menu level. Suggested tiles can always be rejected or permanently deactivated. The company explains that more than 20 other functions are automatically offered with the help of artificial intelligence if they are relevant to the customer. The spectrum ranges from energizing comfort programs such as massages on long-distance journeys to status queries from smart home devices and suggestions for when a phone call should be called back.
Users can choose the UI
Incidentally, the zero-layer user interface is not forced on any owner. After installing the OTA update, you can press and hold the home button to switch between the new UI and the classic view with a dark map and menu bar below, which is familiar from the C and S-Class. However, the new view also retains direct access to the air conditioning at the bottom edge of the screen.
OTA update for the 206 and 223 series
The OTA update is for the 206 series C-Class (production from March to June 2021) and the S-Class of the 223 series (test) including the Maybach models (from production June to November 2021). Both vehicles are factory-equipped with the current MBUX 2. The zero-layer UI in the EQS and EQE, which are optionally available with the MBUX Hyperscreen, was available first and directly ex works. As soon as the update is ready for the customer to install, they will be notified via the MBUX and the Mercedes me app, which is available for Android and iOS. Download and installation should take place in the background after confirmation.
Mercedes also provides postal information
The notification can also be sent in the traditional way: Customers without a Mercedes-me account will be informed by post about the availability of the update.
