Show contact information on your iPhone access screen (for emergency responders and ICE)

Have your contact information on your iPhone's lock screen so emergency responders know who you are and who to call in an emergency. In this tip you can read how it works.

Information for first responders on your iPhone

Almost everyone has a PIN set on their iPhone these days and uses Face ID or Touch ID. That is sensible if you want to protect your data. But if your phone is lost or in the event of an accident, the code lock can be an extra obstacle: emergency services cannot look in the contact list to see who needs to be warned. And if you lose the iPhone, the honest finder cannot contact you. You can prevent this by entering your SOS contacts and ICE (In Case of Emergency) details. This comes in handy in an emergency. This is how you make your contact info on your iPhone readable in an emergency.

Set up ICE (In Case of Emergency) and SOS on your iPhone

For years you have been able to set up a Medical ID on your iPhone. This allows you to make all kinds of crucial information accessible, without anyone having to know your PIN code. Emergency responders know how the function works and can therefore always consult important information such as blood type, medication and allergies. They can also retrieve the contact details of their partner, parents and other immediate family.

Set up Medical ID in your iPhone's Health app

Set up your Medical ID via the Health app on iPhone and iPod touch! Emergency responders can then find important information more quickly in the event of an accident or accident. You can read everything about setting up and using your Medical ID on the iPhone here.

Scenario 1: care provider searches contact info on your iPhone in case of emergency

If you become unconscious or seriously injured in an accident, your phone can be a source of information. Emergency responders want to know who you are, if there are any medical conditions to consider and which family members should be informed. The Medical ID was created for this purpose. They can consult all this information, without knowing the pin code of your device.

Alternatively, you could put a wallpaper with all the desired information on your lock screen, but that is more cumbersome and, moreover, that information is always visible when using the phone. The beauty of the Medical ID is that it is only visible when a counselor searches for it.

How you view the information varies by iPhone. If you have a round home button below your screen, it works differently than if you don't have it. See below how to do it:

  • Without round home button
  • With round home button

Without round home button

If you don't have a round home button, you have an iPhone with Face ID. It is important that the iPhone does not scan your face, otherwise you will bypass your passcode. Follow these steps:

  1. Swipe up on the lock screen, but don't let your iPhone scan your face. The access code window should pop up.
  2. Tap Emergency > Medical ID.
  3. You will now see the name of the owner, a photo, telephone number and important contacts.

With round home button

Do not use a finger registered in Touch ID on these iPhones, otherwise you will bypass your passcode. Follow these steps:

  1. Press the home button to see the code lock. Do not use a finger registered in Touch ID.
  2. Tap Emergency > Medical ID.
  3. You will now see the name of the owner, a photo, phone number and important contacts.

Scenario 2: Honest Finder finds contact info on your iPhone

The contact information on your iPhone also comes in handy in a completely different situation: if you've lost your iPhone. The code lock protects your data, but also has a disadvantage: it is difficult for the honest finder to find out who owns the iPhone. You can prevent this by entering the Medical ID. If you think this is an invasion of your privacy, you can also limit the information to the most crucial, such as a telephone number. You do not have to enter age, height and weight.

Of course, it makes no sense if the finder calls your mobile phone number (the SIM card is in the iPhone, after all), so make sure that there is also a landline phone number or the phone number of close relatives in the list. They must be numbers that can still be reached if your phone is lost.

If you have lost your iPhone, you can also use the Find My app to send a message to the iPhone's access screen. We have a separate list of holiday emergency apps.
