Set up second face for Face ID on iPhone and iPad

You can add a second face or an extra person in Face ID. This gives two people access to the same iPhone or iPad.

With Touch ID you can set up multiple fingers, even if they belong to different people. With Face ID it is also possible to set up multiple faces, but it is limited to two faces. For example, you can give your partner or a roommate access to a shared iPad. Keep in mind that there are certain risks if others can view your device and accounts. You can also use it if you have more than one appearance, for example because you work as a clown, living statue, spy or another profession, or when using Face ID with sunglasses causes problems.

Second face for Face ID

Setting up a second face in Face ID is possible on all devices that use facial recognition. Here's how it works:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to Face ID and Passcode. Don't see this option? Then your device does not have Face ID.
  3. Tap Configure a different appearance.
  4. Now Face ID will ask to scan a second face. Follow the steps on the screen.

You can now unlock the device with two faces, make purchases and the like. The other person who can unlock your iPhone can now also access all sorts of sensitive information in Photos, Notes, and Passwords apps. There's no way to give one face more access than the other face. So be careful who you give access to.

Remove second Face ID face

If you want to remove the other face from Face ID later, there is nothing else to do then delete all Face ID information. You have to reset Face ID in Settings > Face ID and passcode. Then you only reset your own face, but that's a piece of cake.

Set up Face ID with face mask (and glasses)

Unfortunately, you cannot use the second face setting to capture your masked face, as Face ID requires your nose and mouth to be clearly visible during the scan. Apple has come up with something for that. When you set up Face ID (or after a reset), the iPhone asks if you also want to use Face ID with a face mask. To improve the recognition of Face ID with a mask, you can add one or more glasses, for example normal glasses and sunglasses.

In our tip you can read how to use Face ID with a mask used.
