New OLED televisions: LG's “Vanta Black” ensures fewer reflections

LG's new OLED display generation should not only shine brighter and offer greater viewing angle stability. The META panels with microlenses (MLA) also have a new coating that visibly reduces reflections. LG calls the new anti-reflective coating “Vanta Black”.

The effectiveness of the coating is demonstrated in a short video. On the Philips OLED908 television (on the left in the picture) equipped with the new MLA OLED panel, the camera's flash is reflected to a much lesser extent than on the predecessor Philips OLED907 without “Vanta Black”.

A company spokesman explained to the Flatpanels HD website that the new “Super Anti-Reflective Coating” is also used on the LG G3 and reduces reflections by 25 percent compared to the C2 model. On the one hand, this would improve contrast and image sharpness. On the other hand, you can see more in dark scenes when light falls on the panel from outside. The new OLED technology from LG is also said to be used in the Panasonic MZ2000.

A Philips representative spoke of a reduction in total reflectance of up to 30 percent. Specular reflections are said to be reduced by as much as 70 percent.

Vanta Black is a different coating than the new gaming monitors from LG. These use an overall more matt coating, which is referred to as “Gaming Black”.

New coating for Samsung too

Philips has the new WOLED panels from LG on its TV lineup for 2023 in preference to Samsung's QD OLED panels. However, the manufacturer does not rule out the later use of the Samsung panels.

The competition between the WOLED panels from LG Display and the QD OLED panels from Samsung Display shows now also on the subject of coating. As Flatpanels HD reports, the new QD-OLED panels should also have an improved coating to reduce reflections.

This new panel has a "completely updated AR coating" with a multi-layer reflection reduction mechanism designed to reduce light distortion between the layers for reduced diffused reflections, he explained.
