After years of waiting, an Apple Silicon version of Skype is finally coming. According to Microsoft, this optimized version provides much better performance on Macs with M1 and M2 chip.

It's been almost two and a half years since Apple released the first Mac with its own Apple Silicon chip. Since then, optimized versions of many apps have been published, including popular apps such as Photoshop, Microsoft Office and Chrome. But the Apple Silicon version of the widely used app Skype was still missing. Recently, Microsoft finally announced that updated Skype for M1 and M2 Macs is coming soon for everyone.
Skype for Apple Silicon in the works
According to Microsoft, the optimized Skype version on Macs with Apple Silicon chip three times faster than the previous version. The unoptimized version of Skype is usable on Apple Silicon Macs thanks to Rosetta, but it doesn't take advantage of the performance improvements the chips offer. Microsoft says that chats as well as video and audio calls will benefit from the improved version.
In a video, Microsoft shows how fast switching between chats is. According to Microsoft, the connection during (video) calls should also be a lot more stable and the quality of audio and video has been improved in the new version. It is not clear why it took so long for Microsoft to release the optimized version of Skype.
As a regular Skype user, you will have to be patient for a while. The Apple Silicon version will soon be released for everyone. If you can't wait for that anymore, you can already download the Skype Insider app. That is a kind of beta version that already includes support for Apple Silicon.
