Google Maps will soon roll out an update that will allow the app to use Live Activities while navigating. You can then see live from the access screen in which direction you need to go.

Last fall, Apple introduced the Live Activities feature, also known as Live Activities, in iOS 16.1. This is a kind of notification that remains on the lock screen of your iPhone, where the information is updated live. Consider, for example, the delivery of an online order or following a football match with the live score and clock. While there are already quite a few apps with Live Activities, some big names don't support the feature yet. An example of this is Google Maps. But in a blog post, Google itself explains that this will soon change. For example, Google Maps will use the Live activities on your iPhone.
‘Glanceable’ instructions: Google Maps will show you where to go on your lock screen
Google Maps is coming soon with the feature called ‘glanceable directions’. In fact, that means nothing more than having a quick view of your next navigation instruction. For this, Google Maps will show the information on your access screen. This function will be available on both Android and iPhone in the coming months, but for the iPhone, Google Maps uses the Live Activities option for this specific function. Information such as your estimated time of arrival and when to take your next turn can therefore be viewed directly on the access screen. Previously, you first had to unlock your device, open the app and go to navigation.
Images of what the Live Activity of Google Maps will look like have unfortunately not been released yet. But Google does say that it will be available for every type of transport. You do need at least iOS 16.1. Apps that support Live Activities also show this information in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro models. Whether this also applies to Google Maps and what this will look like, Google has not explicitly stated.

More improvements for Google Maps on the go
In the blog post, Google Maps highlights a number of other new features that will be rolled out soon. For example, the new immersive view will be available from today in the first cities worldwide, such as London, Los Angeles and New York. Other cities will follow in the coming months, including Amsterdam. This new view creates 3D images from a variety of collected images, such as Street View and aerial photos. So you see a 3D view, as if you are looking down on the city like a bird. You can even simulate the weather and time of day, so you know what a city looks like at night or when it rains. In addition, you can also look around in restaurants, for example, and see how busy a museum is at a certain time of the day.
Other new features coming to Google Maps include improved AR navigation. You can also search in AR mode and live locations are shown via your phone's camera. This will be rolled out further in airports and shopping centers worldwide in the coming months. Finally, there will be some extra options for cars with Android Automotive, where Google is built-in as standard. For example, you can add charging stations to your planned car trip, you can filter on charging locations with the fastest chargers and you can see in the search results whether a location has a charging station nearby.
