As part of the report for the third quarter of the 2023 financial year, which lasts until March 2023 at Nintendo, the manufacturer announces new sales figures for the switch. According to this, the hybrid game console has now sold more frequently than the Game Boy, although sales have recently been declining.

Almost 15 million Nintendo Switch in one Year

From April to December 2022 inclusive, Nintendo was able to sell 14.91 million Switch consoles, increasing total sales to 122.55 million units. The Switch OLED, which was released in mid-2021, is responsible for around half of sales in the period mentioned, which corresponds to growth of 93 percent compared to the same period last year. The classic Switch and the purely handheld variant Switch Lite sold around 56 percent and 37 percent respectively.

In any case, the combined sales of all three model variants fell by 21.3 percent compared to the last three quarters of 2021, as Nintendo admits – even though the console was almost completely out of stock at the time due to the lack of chips. In fact, the manufacturer already expected this development in May 2022. For the coming fiscal year, Nintendo now expects sales of a total of 18 million switch consoles. Originally, the manufacturer had forecast around 21 million sales, but this expectation was previously revised to 19 million units.

Meanwhile, Nintendo's sales fell by around 1.9 percent compared to the same period last year to 1.3 trillion yen, which corresponds to around 9.1 billion euros. As a result, net profit fell by 5.8 percent to 346 billion yen, which corresponds to around 2.4 billion euros.

The Switch is Nintendo's most successful (stationary) console

At the beginning of 2022, the Switch had already replaced the Wii, which was released at the end of 2006, as Nintendo's best-selling stationary console, because the Wii officially sold 101.63 million units. Now the Switch has also surpassed the iconic handheld Game Boy, which sold 118.69 million units across all model variants. The Nintendo DS, on the other hand, sold 154.02 million units and the PlayStation 2, released in 2000, is still the best-selling game console with over 155 million units.

Reports that the Nintendo Switch has now overtaken the PlayStation 4 should be treated with caution: Sony still lists the platform's sales at 117.2 million units; However, the information was last updated in May 2022. Since then, Sony has only commented on the sales figures for the PlayStation 5, which have recently increased massively. However, the PlayStation 4 is still being sold and more than 5 million sales in three quarters is not unrealistic – so where the Nintendo Switch currently ranks in the ranking of the best-selling game consoles cannot be clarified exactly.
