Apple has now been releasing four iPhone models in the fall for several years in a row. What about in 2023? It seems very likely that Apple will use the same tactic again this year, but of course with the necessary improvements in features, design and more. But what are those improvements? If you're planning to buy a new iPhone this year, this preview of the iPhones of 2023 will keep you up to date with everything we know right now.

Looking Ahead to 2023 Each week in this series of articles, we take a look ahead at Apple's new products for the year ahead. We summarize weekly what you can expect in terms of the different product categories. From the latest rumors to predictions based on the previous versions: with this preview you know what to expect. This week is all about the iPhones.

#1 Which iPhone models will Apple release in 2023?

As mentioned, it will probably be released this year again to four models. For the time being, it seems that Apple will release these models:

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max/iPhone 15 Ultra

The iPhone 15 Ultra may be the new name for the largest Pro model, which is also known as the Pro Max. But according to the most recent rumors, Apple is still opting for Pro and Pro Max this year and an Ultra model will not be added until 2024 (so not as a replacement for the Pro Max model). Anyway: in 2023 we simply expect four iPhones, as direct successors to the current four models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

#2 Which screen sizes will appear for the iPhones in 2023?

No iPhone without a screen. In recent years, Apple has changed screen sizes, but this year everything seems to remain the way it is at the moment. Here are the sizes you can expect:

  • 6.1-inch (iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro)
  • 6.7-inch (iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 ProMax)

There will be no new iPhone SE this year and the mini format will not return this year, despite the fact that the sales figures of the Plus model are currently somewhat disappointing. Apple will therefore make another attempt with a larger Plus iPhone, without the higher price tag of the Pro Max.

We do not expect any changes in terms of screen specs. All models get an OLED screen, with the Pro models getting the best specs with the highest brightness (1000 nits, 1600 nits at HDR). Also only on the Pro models: the 120Hz ProMotion display, which makes animations smoother.

What is a change is the Dynamic Island. You will currently only find this on the Pro models, but in 2023 this notch 2.0 may come to all iPhone 15 models. This therefore provides extra functions on the standard versions.

#3 What does the design of the 2023 iPhones look like

We expect an almost unchanged design for certain models, but there are also models where Apple will make some changes proceed with the design. Here's what we expect:

iPhone 15 (Plus)

We expect an almost unchanged design for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. That means an aluminum housing with a glossy glass back, where the camera bump has an average size with two lenses. You will most likely also find the usual buttons and switch on the side. Apple will still vary a bit in terms of colors, but we don't expect any exciting changes here either. The iPhone 15 is probably very similar to the iPhone 14 and therefore also to the iPhone 13.

iPhone 15 Pro (Max)< /h3>

We expect the biggest changes for these two models. For example, there has been talk of a titanium housing for a while. We already saw this with the Apple Watch Ultra last year, but it could just come to the most expensive iPhones this year. Titanium is then the replacement for stainless steel. In terms of appearance, that gives a different look. Titanium is matte, while the stainless steel bezel of current models is shiny. It also feels slightly different in the hand, partly due to the lighter weight. Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, so that would mean that the iPhones themselves are also a bit lighter.

There is also talk of a new kind of edge at the back. Instead of the straight flat back, the brim would be a bit more rounded from the side to the back. The front of the screen is flat, but the new back makes the device slightly different in hand (if you don't use a case). And speaking of the back: it will most likely be made of frosted glass again, so that wireless charging remains possible. In terms of colors, Apple will again stick to darker ones, such as the space black of the iPhone 14 Pro. We also expect to see a color that stands out (as a successor to dark purple), although we do not yet know what color that will be.

#4 Better cameras, especially on the Pros

One thing we know for sure is that the iPhones have improved camera’ get s. There is always an update to be found with every model, although they are not always the same size. Here's what we expect in brief:

iPhone 15 (Plus)

For the standard models, we again expect two lenses: a wide-angle lens and an ultra-wide-angle lens. That means the telephoto lens will still remain exclusive to the Pro models. There are rumors that the wide-angle lens of the regular models will be upgraded to the 48-megapixel camera that we already see in the Pro models. A source also talks about improved sensors that let more light through, although it is not clear whether this will also come to the regular models.

iPhone 15 Pro (Max)

In addition to the improvement of the aforementioned new sensor for better photos in large light differences, we also expect other improvements for the camera lenses here. One of the most important improvements is the new periscopic camera lens. This allows you to zoom in much further optically, while retaining the high image quality. But this feature may remain exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, because only this model has enough space to accommodate this large component.

What are the improvements we expect for the iPhone 15's camera? According to the latest sources, Apple is opting for a new sensor that should provide a significant improvement in low-light conditions and prevent overexposure.

#5 Performance: the Pro's ahead

Last year, Apple first differentiated between the standard and Pro models in terms of performance. The iPhone 14 (Plus) got the A15 chip with additional GPU core from the iPhone 13 Pro, while the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) got the faster A16 chip. How is that this year?

The two standard models will probably get an upgrade from the A15 chip with 5-core GPU to the A16 chip that you now find in the iPhone 14 Pro. That means slightly better performance, but it won't be a big leap. That actually applies to all chips: the iPhones are all so fast that you will notice little difference in daily use. The iPhone 15 Pro (Max) would then get the new A17 chip. The advantage is that, according to sources, the chip would mainly focus on a longer battery life. That also means that we may only see a significant improvement in battery life on the most expensive models.

An improvement that we expect in terms of performance in all models is the move to Wi-Fi 6E. That is a faster and more reliable standard for WiFi, provided you have a suitable router for it. The latest Macs and iPad Pro already have WiFi 6E and according to various sources we will also see this in the latest iPhones.

Since 2019, the term WiFi 6 has been flying around us. But in the meantime there is already a successor: you can already buy routers with WiFi 6E. We explain exactly what this means, which Apple products are already suitable for it and whether it is already necessary to renew your router.

#7 Release of iPhones of 2022: in spring and autumn

We all expect the release of the 2023 models in the fall. It is quite possible that Apple will release a single device a little later. If this is indeed the case, we think it will apply to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is when we expect the devices:

  • iPhone 15: September 2023
  • iPhone 15 Plus: September 2023
  • iPhone 15 Pro: September 2023< /li>
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: September/October 2023

The iPhone 15 event is not expected until sometime in September 2023, possibly on September 12. About a week and a half later, the new devices will probably be on the shelves.

#8 Price of iPhones in 2023

How much will you have to pay for the new models? Last year, Apple managed to raise prices in Europe considerably, caused by inflation. We think that the devices will be about the same price this year:

  • iPhone 15: from €1,019.-
  • iPhone 15 Plus: from €1,119,-< /li>
  • iPhone 15 Pro: from €1,329
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: from €1,479
